Exporters of mobility aids know this complaint all too well: the goods arrive, the cartons are crushed or split, and the customer's first words are “your packaging is terrible.” Most people blame the carrier, switch forwarders, and see the same damage on the next batch. The problem usually is not transport — it is carton packaging structure. Cartons of the same size behave very differently in a container and through transit depending on how the three layers are put together.
1. Open a carton and read its three layers: face paper, medium, grammage
Cut open a shipping carton and you can feel three layers. The face paper is the outer layer: it carries the printing and absorbs the scuffs and scrapes of transit. The corrugated medium sits in between — it is the skeleton of the box and does most of the compression work. Grammage decides the total weight of the box, which directly drives the per-unit freight cost. Each layer answers one problem: scuffed or torn surfaces usually mean the face paper is underspecified; soft, creased cartons that collapse under stacking need a stronger medium, not more face paper; a box that is simply too heavy means the grammage structure was not worked out.
The layer buyers misjudge most is the medium. Two cartons can look identical from the outside yet differ in cost, and the difference is usually hidden in the medium — outsiders cannot feel it, insiders know at a glance. That is why experienced buyers do not just check whether the printing is clean; they squeeze the box, weigh it in their hand, and tear open the wall to inspect how substantial the medium really is.
2. The carton is the first thing buyers and end users see
A carton does more than carry goods. When a customer visits the factory, the first physical thing they see after the sample room is often the stack of shipping cartons in the dispatch area; when an end user receives the goods, the carton is what they open first. A carton that survives long ocean freight, container stacking and logistics handling keeps the goods intact — no damage claims, no extra cost. A clean, solid carton makes the unboxing experience better, earns good reviews, and supports the seller's store rating.
The reverse is just as telling. When a customer asks you to “make the packaging a bit better,” it usually means they have already paid for damage. As we often put it: if I had no losses and no after-sales claims, why would I ask you to upgrade the packaging at all? Anyone selling cross-border knows a single damage claim costs far more than the goods — return freight and customer patience go with it — and the root cause often sits in this one layer of structure.
3. A serious factory designs the structure instead of just cutting the cost
Making a good carton is not about buying expensive paper. Spending a lot does not always solve the problem; spending a little more in the right place does. The skill in carton structure design is balance across the three layers: reinforce where strength is needed, avoid over-specifying where it is not, and reach the required strength with a sensible grammage. Two boxes with the same dimensions can differ slightly in material cost and a great deal in on-the-road performance.
Packaging is also a fast way to judge a supplier's mindset. A factory that only says “our cartons are already fine” is usually brushing you off. A factory that opens the box unprompted, explains how the face paper, medium and grammage are matched, and points out which damage risks can be designed out is on your side. Find problems proactively instead of waiting for the customer to complain — by the time someone else reports it, someone has usually already been hurt.
Part of the profit in exporting mobility aids is hidden in the carton: freight, damage claims, after-sales cost and reviews are all tied together by a few layers of corrugated board. Next time you visit a factory, do not stop at the sample room — ask for a shipping carton, squeeze it, weigh it, and tear open the wall to look at the medium.
